A Zine About Creative Growth

Letters to a Young Poet, is a collection of letters written by Rainer Maria Rilke delving into the concept of being a creative individual. The writing is melancholic and meditative. The letters don't romanticize the experience of being creative but instead paint it as a slow and relentless process of growth. This idea of growth became the basis for the image-making and typography in this zine.

I scanned still frames of advertisements, reprinted them, and photocopied them, highlighting texture in the images, which mirrors the abstract dot compositions in each spread. Paired with the text, and with this graphic treatment, the images take on new meaning.

I was drawn to an idea presented in the writing that a creative individual has a compulsive need to create. This compulsion is why my and a lot of creatives fill their sketchbooks with strange organic doodles, and I wanted to incorporate that idea into the zine.
