Hi Im Nick
I was nervous to start college. I’d spent the last four years of my life steadily grinding away in the grueling environment of a prestigious math and science high school. My conclusion: I’m not sure I want to pursue math and science. So, with no prior experience in graphic design, I dove in head first at Drexel. I hadn’t heard of the holy grail of vector based shenanigans, Adobe Illustrator, let alone used it. I couldn’t tell you the difference between a typeface and a font. I couldn’t even name a typeface besides Comic Sans or Times New Roman to save my life.
But while I felt highly unqualified in the beginning, I quickly learned that graphic design is not about knowing typefaces or software - it’s about solving creative problems and spending hours deliberating between two compositions that look pretty much the same. It’s about losing track of time, and staying up way too late making things. That was something I could get behind. I’m so grateful to my professors for showing me that it didn’t matter how many photoshop shortcuts I knew, if I could think creatively to solve problems I would be alright.
I’ve realized that the most important thing to have as a designer was not crazy technical skills, but rather ideas.
